2yearold filly cruises past the fellas once again
Ellen Jackson breeds and raises horses so she can sell them to finance her Victory Rose Thoroughbreds farm in Vacaville. She trains them for as long as she has them, and she may not have Bulletproof One much longer.
The 2yearold filly won her debut by 8 lengths going 4½ furlongs May 11 at Golden Gate Fields and somehow improved off of that to win the $101,500 Everett Nevin Stakes by 9¼ lengths going 5½ furlongs Saturday at the Alameda County Fair.
In between, Jackson bought out Kevin and Kim Nish of KMN Racing with whom she bred Bulletproof One. With what the smallish filly has done in just two starts — beating male opponents both times — offers could be pouring in.
“I’m hoping there are a lot of calls,” Jackson said in the winner’s circle after the Everett Nevin Stakes. “She’s got such a long stride for a little horse and she just skips over the track.”
It took Bulletproof One a few yards to get into a good stride Saturday as jockey Cristobal Herrera had to push her to take the lead. But once in front, she toyed with her nine opponents, pushing a 1length lead after a quartermile to 3 lengths after a halfmile and then 5 lengths in midstretch.
“She was a little slow at the start, so I tried to get her going and she responded real well,” Herrera said. “When I got to the stretch I felt like I had a lot of horse. She’s a great filly.”
Bulletproof One, the 72 third choice in the wagering, finished in 1 minute, 5.04 seconds after setting fast fractions of 22.34 seconds and 45.73. Her debut fractions were 22.90 and 46.37 on Golden Gate Fields’ synthetic track.
The Alameda County Fair has a dirt track, and Jackson brought the horse to the Pleasanton site for two workouts — the last a 3furlong blowout in 34.80 seconds.
“I thought she would go in about 0:39, and when I asked the rider how fast he thought she went, he said 0:38,” Jackson said. “It’s only with good horses that you can’t tell how fast they’re going, and she’s a good one.”
Briefly: R B Kindle dominated the Pleasanton Arabian Stakes by 11¼ lengths for her seventh win in nine starts. … The Alameda County Fair ends Sunday, and racing moves to the State Fair beginning Friday.
