San Francisco Chronicle - (Sunday)
DAILY BRIEFING
If you missed it ...
In a week that had as much excitement as a Revolutionary War airport, this actually did happen:
Facebook said it will give extra scrutiny to posts about the 2020 U.S. census, trying to make sure that users don’t spread misinformation. NBC News quoted Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg as saying that the Menlo Park social network will give accuracy about the census “the same weight that it now gives elections.” OK, then. Ford and Volkswagen are expected to sign an agreement as soon as this week to share the cost of developing autonomous vehicles and producing electric cars, the New York Times reported, citing two people with knowledge of the discussions.
Adidas found out that automation and social media often don’t mix. People magazine reported that in an effort to promote its partnership with British soccer club Arsenal, Adidas encouraged tweets with #DareToCreate, which the company would follow with an automated response, citing the user’s Twitter handle. Surprise, surprise: Soon lots of the Twitter handles contained racist and controversial names and phrases. Sigh.
A Jim Beam storage warehouse in Kentucky burned down, destroying 45,000 barrels of aging whiskey. The warehouse was equipped with sprinklers and was insured, the company said. An unknown amount of the bourbon did flow into the Kentucky River, killing some fish, state environmental officials said.
