San Francisco Chronicle - (Sunday)
CHARLES DESMARAIS’ ART PICK
Take a seasoned journalist with an interest in the art that inspires artists, and add one of those artists with a unique take on the idea of “authorship.” To see what you get, the de Young Museum will bring together Jori Finkel, who covers art for the New York Times and the Art Newspaper, and pioneering digital and multimedia artist Lynn Hershman Leeson.
Finkel’s new book, “It Speaks to Me,” comprises interviews with 50 artists, from the iconic (Ai Weiwei, Judy Chicago, David Hockney) to the up-andcoming. The work of Hershman Leeson has been shown and collected at museums throughout the world; her retrospective exhibition “Civic Radar” was presented at San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in 2017.
Their conversation on art, technology and the artist in the middle — or not — is part of the free special programming on Saturdays now being offered by the de Young and the Legion of Honor. 415-680-3891. www.thegreathighway.com
