Davis drops down in order, steps it up

MINNEAPOLIS — Khris Davis doesn’t mind batting in the No. 6 spot in the order at all.

In fact, the A’s DH told The Chronicle, it was his idea, and manager Bob Melvin later confirmed that.

“It was my decision,” Davis said of moving out of his longtime cleanup role. “I just didn’t feel like I was producing enough to hold the team up in those situations. Dropping down took some pressure off me and will help me get things right.”

Saturday night against Minnesota, Davis provided the offensive heroics, too, whacking a twoout, tworun single off first baseman Ehire Adrianza’s glove in the ninth inning.

“My guess is he’s going to hit another home run here at some point, and when he does, he’ll be off to the races,” Melvin said. “We’ll take a big hit right there, which he’s done many times for us.”

Davis is the reigning majorleague homerun leader, and his 22game homerless streak is his longest since being traded to Oakland before the 2016 season. He hasn’t hit a ball out since June 18.

“You can try to do too much up there and have it not happen,” said Davis, whose 16 homers are fourth most on the team. “It will come. I just have to keep working and trust it will be there.”

Davis believes his dropoff was mostly related to the side and hand injuries he had in May and June, but he said he’s now back at 100 percent. “I’m healthy,” Davis said. “I’ve been feeling good, besides the homerun total. That’s the only thing I don’t feel good about.”

During Davis’ homerless funk, the A’s are 196. Thursday night at Minnesota, he provided an RBI double, and Friday night he had two RBI singles.

“As long as the team is winning and we’re rolling, at the end of the day I’m happy,” he said.

Briefly: Catcher Nick Hundley (back, knee) had a scheduled night off at Class A Stockton on Friday. He’s a candidate to be designated for assignment when he comes off the injured list . ... Prospect Sean Murphy (knee) is catching nine innings at the team’s minorleague complex in Arizona. Murphy, one of the A’s top prospects, likely is close to heading out on a rehab assignment.
