San Francisco Chronicle - (Sunday)
Moongate Lounge
28 Waverly Place, San Francisco. 415-857-9688 or www.moongatelounge.com
Hours:
5-11 p.m. Tuesdays-Thursdays, 5 p.m.-midnight Fridays and Saturdays.
Accessibility:
Stairs at entrance with railing; no ramp or elevator. Genderneutral restrooms with one buttonpowered door-opener.
Noise level:
Low to moderate. Booth seating is built to block out sound.
Meal for two, sans drinks:
$36$70. Light meals make the most sense here.
What to order:
Peanuts and anchovies, chicken in a space suit, Parisian egg tart, lamb belly skewers ($16) and buffalo milk soft-serve sundae. The specials are always worth dipping into. On the cocktail side, check out the Io, Titan and Deimos.
Plant-based options:
Scant, though they’ll whip something up for you if you ask.
Drinks:
Full bar with appealing nonalcoholic options.
Transportation:
On the 1-California and 38-Geary Muni lines. Street parking is rough, but it gets easier after 6:30 p.m.
Best practices:
Reservations recommended if you want a booth seat. Great for a nightcap after dining at Mister Jiu’s; also a good spot to wait for your table to open up downstairs. No happy hour, so early hours are easy for walking in.
