St. Mary’s women snap Gonzaga win streak at 21

Taycee Wedin had career highs of six 3pointers and 24 points, Sam Simons added 22 points with five 3s and St. Mary’s ended No. 11 Gonzaga’s 21game winning streak with a 7060 victory on Saturday in Moraga.

The winning streak was the longest in the nation and two shy of the school record.

The Gaels, who lost seven of eight games after falling to Gonzaga 7449 in Spokane, Wash., on Jan. 9, made 14 of 21 from 3point range and held the Bulldogs to 33% shooting overall, including 1 of 15 in the first quarter.

Madeline Holland added 13 points on 6of9 shooting for the Gaels (1113, 67 WCC), who used the hot shooting to overcome 21 turnovers against a team that was allowing 52 points per game.

It was the second game for Gonzaga (232, 121) since starting guard Katie Campbell injured a knee and the first since it was revealed she will miss the rest of her senior year.

Jessie Loera led the Bulldogs with a careerhigh 19 points and seven assists. Jill Townsend added 18 points, 15 in the second half.

Gonzaga, 14th in the country at 46% shooting, got in trouble early, missing its first 10 shots and its last five to trail 184 after the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, starting when Kaylynne Truong hit backtoback 3pointers, the Bulldogs reeled off 12 straight points to close within 2016. However, Simons had a pair of 3pointers in the midst of a 100 run and the Gaels led 3223 at the half.

Five 3pointers in the third quarter helped St. Mary’s push the lead to 5537 at the end of the period. A Wedin 3 to open the fourth quarter put Gonzaga down 21.

USF 70, Loyola Marymount 68: Leilah Vigil’s basket with eight seconds left snapped a tie and capped her 27point outing as the host Dons (915,

210 WCC) defeated the Lions (719, 310).

Pepperdine 79, Santa Clara 61: Hannah Friend scored 24 points as the Waves (1310, 76 WCC) beat the host Broncos (914, 39). Emily Wolph had 24 points for Santa Clara.

Nevada 80, San Jose State 76: Essence Booker scored 14 points to lead four Wolf Pack players in double figures and Nevada (1212, 58 Mountain West) held off the host Spartans (158, 93). St. Ignatius alum Ayzhiana Basallo scored 20 points for San Jose State.

Men

BYU 90, USF 76: Yoeli Childs had a seasonhigh 32 points as the Cougars topped the Dons in Provo, Utah.

TJ Haws had 13 points and seven assists for BYU (197, 83 WCC), which earned its fourth straight victory. Jake Toolson added 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Jimbo Lull had 22 points for the Dons (1610, 56). Khalil Shabazz added 16 points. Jordan Ratinho had 12 points.

Nevada 95, San Jose State 77: Jalen Harris had 32 points to carry the Wolf Pack past the Spartans in Reno, the Wolf Pack’s ninth consecutiv­e home victory. Harris was outdueled by the Spartans’ Seneca Knight, who had a careerhigh 34 points.

Nisre Zouzoua had 15 points and six assists for Nevada (1510, 85). Jazz Johnson added 13 points.

Knight added eight rebounds in the losing effort for the visitors. Richard Washington had 16 points for the Spartans (717, 39).
