Officer killed: A jury convicted a man of firstdegree murder in the 2018 shooting death of a Chicago police commander. The panel on Friday rejected the argument made by Shomari Legghette’s attorney that Legghette did not know Cmdr. Paul Bauer was a police officer and shot him in self-defense. Bauer, a 31-year veteran of the force, was walking to City Hall on Feb. 13, 2018, when he heard a call on his radio that a man was running from officers. Bauer, 53, caught Legghette and during a struggle at the state government building, Legghette pulled out a gun and shot Bauer several times.

Kelly case: Federal prosecutors hit R. Kelly with more criminal charges, accusing the disgraced R&B singer of having unprotected sex with a girl in 2015 without disclosing he had herpes. The new racketeering charges were included Friday in a revised indictment filed in New York City a week after Kelly pleaded not guilty to a separate updated federal indictment in Chicago involving sexual exploitation of children and other allegations. The new charges further a string of other counts of sexual misconduct charges in Illinois, Minnesota and New York, from sexual assault to heading a racketeering scheme aimed at supplying Kelly with girls. He has denied ever abusing anyone.

Testimony dispute: The full federal appeals court in Washington will take up the House of Representatives bid to force former White House counsel Don McGahn to appear before Congress. The decision gives new hope to Democrats who want McGahn’s testimony before the November elections. Arguments will be held April 28. The order comes after a three-judge panel of the appeals court ruled that judges have no role to play in the subpoena fight between the House and President Trump over the testimony of high-ranking administration officials.

Oil spill: The owner of an oil pipeline that spewed thousands of barrels of crude oil onto Southern California beaches in 2015 will pay $60 million to settle allegations that it violated safety laws, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced. Plains All American Pipeline, based in Texas, agreed to operational changes as part of a consent decree that will end a lawsuit filed on behalf of federal and state agencies. The agreement needs federal court approval. On May 19, 2015, oil gushed from a corroded pipeline north of Refugio State Beach in Santa Barbara County. The spill blackened popular beaches for miles, killed or fouled hundred of seabirds, seals and other wildlife and hurt tourism and fishing.

Graft scheme: A University of Miami professor who is an expert on money laundering in Latin America is scheduled to plead guilty for trying to hide $3 million in proceeds from a corruption scheme with Venezuela’s socialist government. Bruce Bagley, 73, was arrested on three counts of money laundering. Authorities said the charges arose from deposits he received from accounts in banks based abroad that allegedly contained stolen proceeds from a Venezuelan public housing project. Court papers filed last week indicate he will plead guilty March 20.
