NEWS OF THE DAY
_1 Migrant camp: Almost 600 migrants arrested while crossing to three Greek islands from the Turkish coast opposite have arrived at a facility in northern Greece where they are required to remain pending deportation, authorities say. The 598 migrants were sent by boat to the northern port of Kavala and by bus to the facility, northeast of the city of Thessaloniki and near the border with Bulgaria. The migrants will stay in tents and will not be able to leave the camp. The migrants are from a wide array of countries in Asia and Africa. Authorities would not provide a breakdown, but officials said the arrivals did not include Iraqis or Syrians. Greece has tightened border controls and has suspended asylum applications since early March, days after Turkey announced that it was opening its borders to migrants and refugees and encouraged them to cross into Greece.
_2 Serbia fire: A fire early Saturday in a residential building in the Serbian capital, Belgrade, has killed six people and injured six more, police said. The firefighters received the alarm call around 4 a.m., Serbian state television RTS reported. The time falls within an overnight curfew imposed in Serbia from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. as part of measures designed to curb the spread of the new coronavirus. It was not immediately clear what caused the fire. Footage from the scene showed smoke billowing from the eighth floor of a densely populated building in the new part of Belgrade.

_4 Marathon man: In the age of confinement, Elisha Nochomovitz figured out a way to run a marathon anyway — back and forth on his balcony. He ran 26.2 miles straight, never leaving his 23foot balcony. It took him six hours and 48 minutes. He saw it as a physical and mental challenge, but he also shared the images online as a way “to extend my support to the entire medical personnel who are doing an exceptional job,” he said from his apartment in Balma, a suburb of the southern French city of Toulouse. Like athletes who ran around their Wuhan, China, apartments or cyclists who found ways to train in their lockeddown Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, hotel rooms, Nochomovitz wanted to show others that it’s possible to stay fit as virus containment measures tighten around the world.
