New confirmed cases near zero in China
After a day without any confirmed cases of the coronavirus, China reported three new infections Sunday, two from outside the country and one locally transmitted in the northeastern province of Jilin, which has experienced a minor outbreak now apparently largely contained.
No new deaths were reported and 79 people remain in treatment, with an additional 380 under isolation and monitoring for being suspected cases or having tested positive for the coronavirus without showing any symptoms.
China has reported a total of 4,634 COVID19 deaths out of 82,974 cases.
The report adds to evidence that the country has largely overcome the epidemic that began in the central industrial city of Wuhan.
INDIA
No letup in record pace of infections
New cases of the coronavirus in India topped 6,000 for a second consecutive day, marking another record jump for the country in a 24hour period.
India reported 6,654 new cases Saturday, bringing the nationwide total to 125,102, including 3,720 deaths.
The rate of infection in the country of 1.3 billion has risen as a twomonth shutdown that has crippled the economy has started to ease.
States with relatively few cases have seen spikes in recent days with increased mobility and as residents, including migrant workers traveling on special trains, have returned home.
GAZA STRIP
Crowded territory reports 1st death
The crowded Gaza Strip recorded its first death from the coronavirus Saturday, officials said, amid fears an outbreak could paralyze the territory’s already overstretched health care system.
The Palestinian health ministry said the deceased was a 77yearold woman who had underlying health problems and had been treated at a field hospital near the Rafah border crossing point upon arriving from Egypt.
Gaza’s authorities, led by the militant group Hamas, reported 35 confirmed new cases last week, bringing the total to 55. All of the infected have been in quarantine and isolation facilities hosting returnees from abroad. There were no reports of community transmission of the virus.
Home to 2 million people, the Gaza Strip has only a little over 60 ventilators and a shortage of medication.
