Trump golfs at his private club

-

President Trump visited one of his private golf clubs for the first time since the pandemic. Trump opened Memorial Day weekend with a trip Saturday to Trump National Golf Club in northern Virginia.

It’s his first time at one of his private golf properties since an early March visit to his golf club in West Palm Beach, Fla. That was several days before Trump declared a national emergency over the coronavirus outbreak.

The outing came a day after Trump said places of worship are “essential” and told governors to allow them to reopen. He has been pushing for states to fully reopen after closing for months to stem the spread of the virus.

CALIFORNIA

L.A. awaits looser virus controls

While most of California has moved to partly reopen in time for Memorial Day weekend, Los Angeles County didn’t join the party.

The nation’s most populous county is not looking to reopen more widely until July Fourth. The number of coronavirus cases hasn’t lowered to meet new state standards for allowing additional businesses and recreational activities.

Los Angeles County accounts for about half of California’s coronavirus infections and half of the state’s deaths.

NEW YORK

Governor eases restrictions

Gov. Andrew Cuomo gave New Yorkers a reprieve from cabin fever by easing the state’s ban on gatherings in time for the Memorial Day weekend.

The governor signed an order late Friday allowing people to assemble in groups of as many as 10 as long as they stay at least 6 feet from other people and wear masks when they can’t maintain that distance.

New York City beaches are also open, but no swimming is allowed and masks must be worn. Mayor Bill de Blasio has said the swimming ban is to curb the spread of the coronavirus by keeping people off public transportation.

“I’m very hopeful that this weekend at our beaches, you’re going to see people following the rules because they know it’s the right thing to do,” de Blasio said. “But if they need some reminders, of course there’ll be people out there educating, giving out face coverings.”
