These “culture workers” as I call them, are another version of first responders; most of the people featured in this column work for themselves. So they understand what financial uncertainty and having a focus outside of an expectation of traditional success feel like. When I began working on this monthly column three years ago, I never envisioned a time in San Francisco when people wouldn’t be able to gather. As our notion of cultural intimacy shifts, and the longer this pandemic is present in our collective lives, I keep getting the sense that this new normal could be a chance to create something better than what existed before. Let’s hope.

?? ?? “All of a sudden, what goes into an art event is now made completely clear to people of how many people the arts employ. It’s not just this touchy-feely thing all about the artist. It’s like the art is its own constellation and its own galaxy. And in that galaxy around each artist there’s a lot of other people, there’s a lot of support with it. So that support network is one of the first things that collapses along with the artists. And that’s why I say no one is winning at this.”
