Gold medalist Morrow dies

Bobby Joe Morrow, the U.S. sprinter who won three gold medals in the 1956 Melbourne Olympics while a student at Abilene Christian University, died Saturday. He was 84.

Morrow’s family said he died of natural causes at home in San Benito, Texas, near the Mexico border on the gulf coast. Morrow won the 100 and 200 meters in Melbourne and anchored the United States’ champion 400 relay team, matching the world record of 20.6 seconds in the 200 and helping the relay squad set a world record.

Earlier in 1956 he successful­ly defended his AAU 100yard title and swept the sprints for Abilene Christian at the national college championsh­ips. He was honored as Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrate­d, and he won the AAU’s James E. Sullivan Award, for the nation’s top amateur athlete, the next year. Roosevelt Taylor, a former 49er and an AllPro safety on the Chicago Bears’ 1963 NFL championsh­ip team, died Friday at 82. Taylor played for 21⁄2 seasons with the 49ers when the Bears traded him midway through the 1969 season to San Francisco for guard Howard Mudd. He finished his career playing for Washington in 1972, making his only Super Bowl appearance. Taylor’s son, Brian, was a running back with the Bears and Buffalo Bills for a short time. Coronaviru­s: Major League Soccer players have approved a plan to resume play in Orlando, asking MLS to agree to significan­t changes to its initial proposal, according to the Athletic. The league will review the players’ proposal. Sports events will be allowed to resume in England beginning Monday without any spectators, providing they comply with the government’s coronaviru­s protocols. It paves the way for the June 17 return of the Premier League. The Austrian Health Ministry has approved safety conditions for Austria to host two Formula One Grand Prix races in July.

Soccer: Bayern Munich beat Fortuna Dusseldorf 50 for its fourth straight win since the resumption of the Bundesliga. Basketball: Florida guard Andrew Nembhard is removing his name from the NBA draft, but won’t return to the Gators. The sophomore said he’ll transfer.
