‘Love, Victor’ on Hulu is cause for celebration

- — Jose Alejandro Bastidas

“Love, Victor” is not a perfect example of LGBTQ representation, but it gets pretty darn close.

A sequel to the 2018 film “Love, Simon,” the dramedy follows Victor Salazar (Michael Cimino) and his family after they move to the town of Creekwood for a fresh start. Victor, who reveals he is still figuring out his sexuality, develops a social media friendship with the film’s central character, Simon (Nick Robinson).

While a story about coming out has been done before, “Love, Victor” explores the journey through the lens of a member of a conservative and religious Latino family.

Cimino brings relatability to the role of Victor, though critics have denounced the series for giving a leading LGBTQ role to a straight actor. Is it ideal for LGBTQ roles to go to LGBTQ actors? Of course. But the show highlights how perception of queer life has shifted in our society, and that progress is a reason to celebrate this Pride season.

“Love, Victor”: Season one streaming exclusively on Hulu.
