San Francisco Chronicle - (Sunday)
NEWS OF THE DAY
_1 Severe storm: A tropical storm that brought heavy rain to MidAtlantic states and southern New England was downgraded Saturday to a posttropical cyclone as it moved over upstate New York. The system had closed beaches and flooded shore town streets after it made landfall as a tropical storm Friday afternoon in New Jersey. It weakened once it hit land and was expected to dissipate by Sunday, forecasters said. The storm was expected to move into western New England and then southeastern Canada later Saturday and into Sunday, forecasters said. No coastal watches or warnings were in effect for the system. _2 DACA program: A group of prominent business leaders urged President Trump on Saturday to leave in place a program — Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals — affecting roughly 800,000 young immigrants who are shielded from deportation, saying it would disrupt the economy and impact the battle against the coronavirus. The signers of the letter included executives with Apple, Google and Facebook, as well as groups including the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and almost every sector of the manufacturing industry.
_3 Extradition case: A former governor wanted in Mexico on charges of stealing tens of millions of dollars while in office was arrested in Miami and faces extradition to his country, U.S. authorities said. Csar Horacio Duarte Jquez, who served as governor of Chihuahua, has been a fugitive living in Texas and other parts of the United States since fleeing Mexico in 2017 amid corruption allegations. He was arrested Wednesday by the U.S. Marshals Service after a traffic stop in Miami, authorities said. An extradition petition was filed by U.S. authorities in the District of New Mexico, where Duarte might be transferred for future hearings before his likely extradition to Mexico on aggravated embezzlement charges. _4 Officers charged: Three Los Angeles police officers have been charged with falsifying records to claim people they stopped were gang members or associates, prosecutors said Friday. The members of the Police Department’s Metropolitan Division were charged in a 59count complaint alleging one count each of conspiracy to obstruct justice and multiple counts of filing a false police report and preparing false documentary evidence. The officers were identified as Braxton Shaw, 37, Michael Coblentz, 42, and Nicolas Martinez, 36. Shaw’s attorney, Gregory Yacoubian, wrote in an email that he is confident his client will be cleared of wrongdoing, saying he always acted at the direction of police leadership. _5 Recall drive: Some citizens have begun a recall petition against the mayor of Norman, Okla., and half the City Council because they’re upset over cuts to police funding and orders to wear masks in public. The group, Unite Norman, is unhappy with the council for its decision last month to reallocate about 3.6% of the Police Department’s annual budget. Many residents in Oklahoma’s thirdlargest city are upset with Mayor Breea Clark’s decision last week to impose a requirement that people wear masks in public after a surge in coronavirus cases.
