Astros rally to beat Jansen and Dodgers

-

Alex Bregman singled in the goahead run during a fiverun ninth inning, and the Astros rallied past the Los Angeles Dodgers 75 under smoky skies Saturday night in Houston’s first visit since the infamous 2017 World Series.

The Dodgers blew a threerun lead in the ninth when closer Kenley Jansen (31) got knocked around, giving up four consecutive hits without an out.

Carlos Correa and Aledmys Diaz singled, Josh Reddick hit a tworun double and Martin Maldonado added another single. George Springer then grounded into a fielder’s choice to third baseman Max Muncy, who committed an error while Reddick scored to tie the game at 5.

Bregman followed with a single to center that made it 65. Bregman scored on Yuri Gurriel’s sacrifice fly.

“That was the win of the year,” Astros manager Dusty Baker said. “Hopefully, we look back on this as the turning point of our season.”

Fans aren’t allowed inside this season because of the coronavirus, but a group of Dodger supporters greeted the Astros’ bus as it pulled in. They shook large plastic and metal garbage cans in the air, a reference to Houston’s signstealing scheme that involved signaling pitches by banging on garbage cans.

“I loved it,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said before the game. “They have every right to do whatever they feel to express their feelings. Just shows the passion that Dodger fans have.” Braves 2, Nationals 1: Rookie Ian Anderson allowed one hit over seven scoreless innings and visiting Atlanta held on after closer Mark Melancon escaped a bases-loaded jam in the ninth. Yankees 2, Orioles 1: Luke Voit hit a game-ending sacrifice fly leading off the 10th, and the host Yankees opened a 41⁄2-game lead over Baltimore for the last playoff spot.

Phillies 12, Marlins 6: Bryce Harper homered, doubled and reached base five times, leading Philadelphia in Miami.

Rays 5, Red Sox 4: Brandon Lowe and Austin Meadows homered for AL East-leading Tampa Bay against last-place Boston in St. Petersburg, Fla.

Royals 7, Pirates 4: Adalberto Mondesi homered and stole a base for the third consecutive game, and former USF pitcher Kyle Zimmer got his first career win for host Kansas City.

Cubs 4, Brewers 2: Jason Heyward’s three-run homer off Milwaukee closer Josh Hader in the ninth lifted visiting Chicago. Twins 8, Indians 4: Byron Buxton homered for the second straight night and Minnesota won at home.

Mariners 7, Diamondbacks 3: Ty France and Jose Marmolejos hit homers and Justus Sheffield pitched seven quality innings for Seattle in Phoenix.

Angels 5, Rockies 2: Jared Walsh hit a two-out, three-run homer in the 11th inning and visiting Los Angeles beat Colorado. It was Walsh’s fourth straight game with a home run.

Cardinals 7, Reds 1: Dakota Hudson allowed one hit in six innings and host St. Louis backed him with four home runs.

Blue Jays 3, Mets 2: Bo Bichette singled and scored in his return to the lineup from a right knee strain for Toronto in Buffalo, N.Y. White Sox 14, Tigers 0: Jose Abreu hit a pair of three-run homers and matched a career high with seven RBIs for host Chicago, which beat Detroit for the eighth straight time.
