Water recycling crucial

- Lucille Lang Day, Oakland Andrew Smith, Santa Rosa Randy Fitz, San Francisco Michael Doud, Sausalito

Regarding “Delta on the edge” (Front Page, Sept. 6): That was an excellent story by Kurtis Alexander on the proposed single tunnel to transport fresh water from Northern California down to the Central Valley farmers. What is needed is a followup story on California building a series of water recycling plants in the Central Valley, potentially reducing the need for fresh water by at least 25%.

The counties and cities in the Central Valley don’t have the money to build and operate these water recycling systems, but the state of California does. Somehow no one is looking at this solution to save fresh water in our state.

I have read that Orange County is doing a great job of recycling water and putting it into the underground aquifer in that county. Someone needs to look at that success and make it part of the solution for the farmers’ need for water for their crops.

Boost for Postal Service

Exclusive distribution of the vaccine, once approved, would be a real shot in the arm for the U.S. Postal Service!

Representation of GOP

Regarding “Too late for 2020, but Electoral College must go” (John Diaz, Insight, Sept. 6) and “Keep Electoral College” (Letters, Sept. 9): I find any discussion regarding a system that lets a candidate with fewer votes win to be inane. Any GOP person saying they will be misrepresented is absurd. The representation of GOP views is clearly your responsibility. It has become obvious that these views are held by a minority of the people.

Therefore, that the GOP is underrepresented in government is because most people don’t ascribe to its views. Until the GOP creates views and actions that benefit most of the people, it will be in the minority. It is not that conservatism is wrong, it is that fewer people believe that the conservative ideology works for most of the people.

In our past, it has proved to work only for a minority, and they tend to be white, rich or welloff people. To GOP believers, until you create policies that work for all the people, then your current saving grace to win is the actions used today: voter suppression, lies about voter fraud and of course the Electoral College.
