Careers: Mark, designer at Facebook. Julie, independent mask- maker. How many masks do you own: We’ve lost count.

Mark: Early on I was helping illustrate masks with markers because people would call and ask “Do you have Wonder Woman? Do you have Captain America? Do you have Elizabeth Warren?” One of the first I drew was the Ruth Bader Ginsburg mask.

Julie: I feel safer wearing a mask. I have anxiety dreams sometimes that I’m in public without my mask. Mark: They’re a huge silver lining in that they’re a great creative outlet. 37, San Francisco

Career: Concert promoter, KC Turner presents. How many masks do you own? I primarily wear my “i like you.” masks, which I had made. “i like you.” is my signature for the business, all in lower case with a period. It was this funny thing I have in my email signature. When the pandemic hit, a fan said “You should make masks that say ' i like you.’ ”

Why you mask up: Wearing one is the right and responsible thing to do. Whenever I travel outside San Francisco, a little farther north, wearing it proudly sends a message that I’m here and I care about you; I hope you care about me, too.
