Fantasy evolved in ‘ I Broke the Looking Glass’

- — Lily Janiak

Eddy ( Alicia Piemme Nelson) was probably right to want to stay in bed. All at once, a publisher rejects her submission, her sister gets in trouble and her boss calls. But just at that moment of crisis in Puja Tolton’s short film, a new world comes into being.

“I Broke the Looking Glass” was supposed to be a play with multimedia elements, the culminating project for Tolton’s artist residency with Awesome Theatre. “Then it was going to be live with puppets with no audience,” writes executive producer Anthony R. Miller. “Then it became a movie.”

The project, which features a who’s who of indie theater actors, including Sango Tajima, Troy Rockett and Charlie Gray, suggests how quickly small theaters have evolved during the pandemic. Camerawork and editing, while scrappy, are thoughtful and composed, with real care put into visual storytelling. Phil Wong directs.

“I Broke the Looking Glass”: Available to stream through Jan. 1. $ 10 suggested donation. https:// awesometheatre. org/
