Charles E. Norman, a retired probation officer with the San Francisco Probation Department, died unexpected­ly January 16. He was 77. Mr. Norman, a resident of the Bay Area for more than 50 years, lived in Oakland. He was a native of Corinth, Mississipp­i, a graduate of Southern Illinois University, and a former Peace Corps volunteer. For the last 10 years he served as a docent on the former Franklin D. Roosevelt yacht, the USS Potomac, which was docked at Jack London Square.

In addition to several cousins and family members in Mississipp­i, he is survived by his lifetime partner, Larry P. Miller of San Francisco.
