Neighborhood Spotlight

- By Jordan Guinn

South Beach features condos, easy public transportation and a worldclass baseball park.

Home to a worldclass ballpark, condo buildings and plenty of transportation options, South Beach stands out as one of the city’s best destinations for young professionals.

Mixeduse developments dominate South Beach, a moderately affluent neighborhood bordered by the Embarcadero, King and 3rd streets. South of the Bay Bridge, South Beach rests near South of Market and Rincon Hill. It’s only a short jaunt from Mission Bay, the Financial District and SOMA, meaning South Beach residents enjoy a prime location near San Francisco’s biggest job centers.

The neighborhood began its transformation more than two decades ago, when what’s now Oracle Park was constructed at the southern edge of the community. Midrise condos and mixeduse developments began sprouting after the ballpark’s development in the once industrial area. There’s a mix of historic structures and modern buildings in South Beach. The Beacon and The Watermark are two luxury buildings in the neighborhood. South Park, a community park that’s undergone a facelift, resides in the center of the district. Originally an exclusive residential neighborhood, South Park is now associated with tech workers.

South Beach has plenty of transportation options. MUNI’s newest light rail run goes down the Embarcadero and both Highway 80 and a BART station are in close proximity.

The neighborhood also attracts creatives. Academy of Art University has its main buildings in South Beach. San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art also resides in South Beach, along with a number of popular dining destinations and watering holes. Hundreds of boats are kept at South Beach Harbor Marina, a popular hangout spot in the community that’s popular with renters.

South Beach’s dense, urban feel is one that’s brimming with energy. Commuters and residents alike pack the crowded streets. The median home value is just under $1 million, and about 5,000 people call the neighborhood home.
