Marilyn S. Rosekind passed away on January 25, 2021, a day short of her 90th birthday. Marilyn was born and raised in San Francisco, CA, the daughter of Anthony Shaves and Pauline (Graf) Shaves and the sister of Verlayne (Shaves) Offenbach. She attended Lincoln High School and obtained her Associates degree at San Francisco Community College.

Marilyn was married to Barry Rosekind and they had two children, Mark and Gary. Barry was a San Francisco Police Officer, a motorcycle officer who was killed in the line-of-duty in 1958, when Marilyn was 27, Mark 3.5, and Gary 2 years old. Marilyn dedicated her life to raising her two boys, moving from San Francisco to San Bruno, CA, later residing in Foster City and eventually living for over a decade at the Magnolia of Millbrae.

Marilyn’s career spanned decades as a legal secretary, office manager in a dental office, at a credit union, and for years as the executive secretary for the Board at the San Mateo Community College District. A passionate supporter of law enforcement, Marilyn was one of the founders of the Bay Area Law Enforcement Assistance Fund (BALEAF), an organization dedicated to support the families of fallen officers. She served as BALEAF’s first President and continued to serve in that capacity for the next 10 years; she remained on the Board of Directors until her passing. Her community leadership and involvements were legendary and were recognized through many honors and awards. Throughout her life Marilyn served in leadership roles, as well as being a member of Women’s American ORT, was president of multiple

PTAs, was a booster for many swimming and basketball endeavors for her boys, and was President of the Magnolia’s resident association.

Marilyn’s son Mark is married to Debra Babcock and they have two children, Aaron Rosekind and Eve Rosekind. Aaron is married to Madalyn Radlauer and they have one child, ninemonth-old Isaac. Marilyn enjoyed every moment on video calls with her great-grandson and seeing his photos always made her smile. Marilyn’s son Gary was married to Stephanie Rosekind and they had one son, Barry Rosekind, married to Esti Rosekind. Gary was diagnosed with cancer at

15 years old and after a 20-year battle, he passed away in 1991, at the age of 35.

Marilyn had a large extended family through her sister Verlayne and Fred Offenbach and their children, Karen Gourdin and husband Bill Gourdin, Paula Schlesinger and husband Rabbi George Schlesinger, and Randy and Elaine Offenbach. The family also extended to her sister-in-law, Sylvia (Rosekind) Solomon and Bert Solomon and their children, Karen Scheikowitz and husband Jay Scheikowitz, Roger Solomon and wife Fatima Solomon, Ted Solomon and wife Candace Solomon, and Mindy Zych and husband Peter Zych. Marilyn was beloved by so many people who were the recipients of her motherly love, caring, support, warmth, and treats. Her strength and optimism are embodied in her ever-present guidance to “be happy.” Donations in her memory may be made to BALEAF (baleaf.org).
