Jack Palladino
July 9, 1944 - February 1, 2021
Jack Palladino was born in Boston, Massachusetts on July 9, 1944. He attended Boston Latin School, Cornell University, and University of California Berkeley, for graduate work in Political and China Studies. He earned a law degree from UC Boalt Hall.
In 1977, he formed a partnership and marriage with investigator Sandra Sutherland, whom he met after an undercover prison investigation. His long career as an attorney/ investigator included many historic cases, such as the Patty Hearst kidnapping, the Jonestown Massacre, the murder of Archbishop Gerardi in Guatemala, the Bill Clinton Presidential campaign, the Edmund Safra defamation case, the Hell’s Angels RICO trial, the Julian Assange rape charges in Sweden, and a significant amount of pro bono work.
Palladino & Sutherland’s practice also included defenses of anti-war activists such as David Fine, Tom Smit, and Ron Goodman, and assignments for entertainers Don Johnson, Sylvester Stallone, John Belushi, Robin Williams, Ozzy Osbourne, Mariah Carey, Courtney Love, and many others. Subsequent to his work with whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand, he appeared as himself in the Russell Crowe film, “The Insider”, about the first successful lawsuit against Big Tobacco.
Jack was a professionalcaliber photographer and a lover of classical, jazz, and blues music. He enjoyed spending time at his vacation homes in Italy and Australia, and was an avid collector of eclectic pens, knives, cameras, and masks.
Jack was attacked outside of his San Francisco home on January 28 and succumbed to his injuries on February 1.
He leaves behind grieving wife and partner, Sandra Sutherland, and three stepchildren, Nick Chapman, Amanda Chapman, and Jude Bond, as well as four adored grandchildren, Denis Ivanov, Izabela Sokolova, Georgia Bond, and Ronan Bond. He is predeceased by parents Nunzio Palladino and Dina Ciamma Palladino. He is survived by brother, Paul Palladino; sisters-inlaw, Heather Sutherland and Miriam Margolyes; daughter-in-law, Jeni Bond; the Gregorie, D’Afflitti, and Palladino families; godson, Jak Loewenstein; and dear friends, Richard Loewenstein, Roy Loewenstein, and Anna Nichols; Mel Honowitz and Elizabeth Colton; Michael Collins; Marta Johansen; and Phllip Belber. The family would deeply appreciate, instead of flowers, donations to the Boston Latin School Alumni Fund, to which Jack was deeply committed. There will be no services at this time, but after COVID is contained, there will be a memorial service at which, as we always promised Jack, the Trumpet Voluntary will be played.
