Oregon State earns Pac12 championsh­ip

Maurice Calloo scored 15 points off the bench and Jarod Lucas added 14 as fifthseede­d Oregon State (1712) knocked off No. 23 Colorado 7068 for the Pac12 men’s basketball tournament title Saturday night in Las Vegas.

Lucas hit two big free throws with 16 seconds left to play. Free throws by Roman Silva and Lucas then sealed it.

McKinley Wright IV led thirdseede­d Colorado (228) with 18 points. Teammate Evan Battey had 16 points and eight rebounds. Wright scored six of his points in the final 45 seconds.

Statistica­lly, the teams were even, with Colorado holding a fivereboun­d edge on the boards.

Oregon State, in its first conference title game since 1988, led by five at halftime. The Beavers are the first team in Pac10/ 12 history to reach the final after being picked to finish last.

ACC: Michael Devoe scored 20 and Georgia Tech shot 52% after halftime to beat No. 15 Florida State 80-75 for the title in Greensboro, N.C. League player of the year Moses Wright added 15 points and eight rebounds for the fourth-seeded Yellow Jackets (17-8), who won their first title since 1993 and will end an 11-year NCAA Tournament drought. Scottie Barnes scored 21 for Florida State (16-6).

American Athletic: Justin Gorham scored 15 points, including four free throws in the final 27 seconds, and No. 7 Houston (23-3) advanced to its third consecutiv­e league final with a 76-74 triumph over Memphis (16-8) in Fort Worth, Texas. Boogie Ellis had 27 points for Memphis, but he had a huge turnover with 49 seconds left. Next up for the Cougars is fifth-seeded Cincinnati on Sunday. The Bearcats (12-10) earned a 60-59 victory over topseeded Wichita State (16-5).

Big East: Patrick Ewing will take Georgetown back to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2015 after the eighth-seeded Hoyas completed a surprising run to the title with a 73-48 win over No. 17 Creighton in New York. The Hoyas (13-12) closed the first half on a 23-2 run that put them up 18 at the break against second-seeded Creighton (20-8). The 58-year-old Ewing is the first person in Big East history to be the most outstandin­g player on a Big East tournament champion and coach a team to a Big East tournament title.

Big Ten: Kofi Cockburn scored 18 of his 26 points in the first half, and No. 3 Illinois (22-6) beat No. 5 Iowa 82-71 to reach the tournament final in Indianapol­is.

The Fighting Illini have won six straight, three against top-10 foes. If Illinois beats No. 9 Ohio State, a 68-67 winner over No. 4 Michigan in the other semifinal, it would claim its first tourney title since 2005. Luka Garza had 21 points and 12 rebounds for Iowa (21-7). Duane Washington Jr. scored 24 points to lead Ohio State’s win. The Buckeyes (21-8) will play their fourth game in four days Sunday. Michigan (20-4) cut a 13-point deficit to one in the final 41⁄2 minutes.

Big 12: Matt Coleman scored a careerhigh 30 and Jericho Simms added a career-best 21 for Texas (19-7), which beat No. 12 Oklahoma State 91-86 in Kansas City, Mo., for its first Big 12 tournament title. Kai Jones and Andrew Jones added 13 points apiece for third-seeded Texas. Cade Cunningham had 29 points for the fifth-seeded Cowboys (20-8).

Mountain West: Matt Mitchell scored 14 to lead No. 19 San Diego State (23-4) to a 68-57 decision over Utah State (20-8) to win the tournament title in Las Vegas. The Aggies beat San Diego State in the previous two tournament championsh­ip games. The Aztecs, who also won the regularsea­son championsh­ip, had lost six of their previous seven title game appearance­s. Neemias Queta led the Aggies with 18 points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots.

SEC: Herbert Jones had 21 points, 13 rebounds and four assists to help No. 6 Alabama (23-6) rally for a 73-68 semifinal win over Tennessee (18-8) in Nashville. Top-seeded Alabama faces LSU in Sunday’s championsh­ip in search of its first SEC tournament title since 1991. Cameron Thomas scored 21 points to lead LSU (18-8) to a 78-71 win over No. 8 Arkansas (22-6). Moses Moody tied his season high with 28 points for Arkansas. Justin Smith added 21.

Briefly: The Raleigh (N.C.) News & Observer reported that Duke, which dropped out of the ACC tournament Thursday and declared its season over after a player tested positive for the coronaviru­s, could change course and play in the NCAA tourney if it is offered at-large bid. The Blue Devils, 13-11 this season, have not missed an NCAA Tournament since 1995 . ... Asante Gist scored 18 points to lead Iona past Fairfield 60-51 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament title game. Rick Pitino, in his first year at Iona, joined Tubby Smith and Lon Kruger as the only coaches to take five schools to the NCAA Tournament. Pitino, 68, won national titles at Kentucky (1996) and Louisville (2013), led Providence to the 1987 Final Four and also coached Boston University to the NCAA Tournament in 1983.

Women

Big Ten: Chloe Bibby scored 21 and Mimi Collins had 17, leading No. 7 Maryland (24-2) to a second consecutiv­e title, 104-84 over Iowa (18-9) in Indianapol­is.

Big 12: NaLyssa Smith had 21 points and 14 rebounds and No. 6 Baylor (24-2) recorded a 66-55 win over Texas (18-9) in the semifinals in Kansas City. In its ninth straight Big 12 final, Baylor will face No. 17 West Virginia (21-5), which topped Oklahoma State 59-50 with 19 points and 15 rebounds from Esmery Martinez. Natasha Mack had 19 points, nine rebounds, eight blocks and three steals for the Cowgirls (18-8). Briefly: No. 21 Missouri State pulled out of the Missouri Valley Conference tournament on Saturday after a positive coronaviru­s test in Bradley’s program. The teams were scheduled to meet in the semifinals, but the Lady Bears decided to opt out just before tip-off . ... Cal Baptist, the nation’s lone undefeated Division I women’s team, beat Grand Canyon 78-60 in the WAC tournament title game — but it’s Utah Valley that is headed for the NCAA tourney from the league. Cal Baptist (24-0) is in the third year of a four-year transition to Division I and ineligible for the NCAA Tournament. The league predetermi­ned that Utah Valley would be the WAC’s automatic qualifier if Cal Baptist won the tournament. Utah Valley was 10-4 in conference play while Grand Canyon was 8-4 within a league schedule hit with pandemicre­lated cancellati­ons.
