James Philip Murphy (Phil) passed away peacefully at his San Francisco home in the early morning hours of Tuesday, March 9, 2021, with his beloved wife and daughter at his side. He was a 1951 graduate of St. Cecilia’s Grammar School, where he remained a life long and loyal parishioner. He was also an extremely proud graduate of the Archbishop Riordan High School class of 1955. After high school, Phil went on to graduate from St Mary’s College in Moraga with a Business degree. Phil’s friendly and personable demeanor helped him succeed as a well recognized sales representative in Northern California for the SOLO Cup Company for 30 years. He loved living in “the City,” and was a die-hard San Francisco Giants fan and 49er faithful. Phil also loved spending time with his family and friends at Lake Tahoe. He particularly loved sitting on the beach and swimming in the Lake at Sand Harbor. Anyone who knew Phil knows how much he loved conversation and always had a great story to tell.

Phil is survived by his cherished wife of 58 years, Helen, whom he met in the first grade at St. Cecilia’s and was a fellow 1951 classmate. He is also survived by his daughter, Dawn Reidy (Marty) and son, Jimmy (Sheena). He was the BEST grandpa ever to Martin and Katie Reidy and Jason and Shealynn Murphy. He leaves behind his beloved sister, Rosemary Lally and many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

Phil was born August 23, 1937 in Hayward, California, the youngest of ten children to Daniel and Ann Murphy. We are comforted to know he has surely been welcomed to heaven by his parents, his brothers Joseph, Dan, Leo, and Bill, and sisters, Rita, Marie, Loretta and Ann,

If you would like to honor Phil’s spirit and generosity, donations can be made in his name to his beloved high school at Archbishop Riordan High School, Attn: Development Office, 175 Frida Kahlo Way, S.F., CA 94112 (www. riordanhs.org).

Thank you to Dr. Daniel Pound and UCSF Medical Center for the medical care they provided Phil over the last several years. Thank You also to his wonderful caregivers and Pathways Hospice for the care and support they provided to Phil and his family over the last several weeks of his life.

Phil loved life to the fullest. He was loved and admired by many. He will be greatly missed.
