Barbara S. Scribner ( Nee Stanley )

Barbara was a San Francisco Native, born to the late Ethel and Henry Stanley at Letterman Army Hospital in the Presidio, and sister to the late Beverly Stanley. Growing up an army brat, she spent her early years developing a love for the Japanese people, and stayed in touch with her childhood amah for many years into adulthood. After her graduation from Notre Dame de Victoires in 1956, she considered becoming a nun, however taking a vow of silence was not for her, as those who knew her, knew she had the gift of gab. She began her career working as a hat check girl at the Fairmont Hotel, alongside her childhood schoolmate, Joyce Picinni. She began to make a name for herself as a key team member at the “Great Big E”, the Emporium on Market Street, where she started in the men’s department, and rose through the ranks, working the information booth, then assistant clerical bookkeeper, all the way up to Executive Row in the buying office, working tirelessly for many Presidents and CEOs. When the Emporium closed, she moved to the Macy’s at Stonestown Mall, where she brought along her best friend, Carol Guardino, and helped mentor many others along the way, including now Macy’s CEO, Jeff Gennette, Keith (Love in bloom), and Nicole Chow.

Barbara retired at least four times, only to be drawn back into the lure of the working world before finally taking the time to enjoy the fruits of her labor.

Barbara loved traveling, both domestically and internationally, to places such as Hawaii, Alaska, Oregon, Washington, Reno, Florida, Oklahoma, and South Lake Tahoe, as well as adventures in Jamaica, Panama, Canada, Mexico, Columbia, Italy, England, Hong Kong, Singapore, and others.

As long-time fan of the 49ers, she enjoyed games at Kezar stadium, and even caught the eye of one of the players, whom she dated for a spell. She loved Basketball, especially the Warriors, and the San Francisco Giants, especially Willie McCovey. Barbara enjoyed spending time at fine art museums, Harley motorcycles, and animals, especially dogs, cats and horses, even though she was allergic to all three of them!

Barbara was a member of the San Francisco Breakfast Club and Dolger Senior Center. She has so many friends that loved her, laughed with her, and enjoyed her favorite things with her, which was good food, roses, and most of all, a glass of champagne and casinos.

Barbara is now at peace, with no more suffering. Her ashes now join her parents and sister near the Golden Gate Bridge. As we bid Aloha to Barbara, raise a toast to her. Champagne until we meet again.
