Sandoval makes Braves roster

Former Giants third baseman Pablo Sandoval made the roster of the Atlanta Braves at the deadline for decisions on free agents who had gone to spring training with minorleagu­e contracts.

Atlanta also added former Giants infielder Ehire Adrianza and reliever Nate Jones.

Other players making rosters included former A’s infielder Eric Sogard (Cubs), former Giants second baseman Joe Panik (Blue Jays), former Giants pitcher Derek Holland (Tigers), outfielder Jay Bruce (Yankees), catcher Sandy Leon (Marlins), pitcher Ian Kennedy and infielder Brock Holt (Rangers), and pitcher Brandon Kintzler and outfielder Matt Joyce (Phillies). Major league home run champion Luke Voit (22 in 2020) needs knee surgery to repair a partial meniscus tear, and is expected back by the New York Yankees in May.

Golf: Scottie Scheffler moved into the semifinals of the Dell Technologi­es Match Play in Austin, Texas, by taking down Ian Poulter (5 and 4) and Jon Rahm (3 and 1).

Scheffler will play 2013 champion Matt Kuchar, who beat Jordan Spieth 1up in the morning and then dispatched Brian Harman by rolling in a 10foot birdie putt on the 17th hole of their quarterfin­al match.

The other semifinal pits France’s Victor Perez, who made short work of Sergio Garcia (4 and 3) in their quarterfin­al, and Billy Horschel, who never led in his quarterfin­al match until Tommy Fleetwood sent his tee shot out of bounds on their 19th hole. Inbee Park shot a 3under 69 to reach 12under 204 and open a fivestroke lead over three players at the LPGA Tour’s Kia Classic in Carlsbad (San Diego County).

Obituary: Howard Schnellenb­erger, a pipe smoker with a pushbroom mustache and gruff baritone and grandiose visions for football at thenunhera­lded Miami, Louisville and Florida Atlantic, died at 87 in Boca Raton, Fla.

Schnellenb­erger revived the sport at Miami (national championsh­ip, 1983) and Louisville (Fiesta Bowl win over Alabama, 1990) and started a successful program at Florida Atlantic. He also was the offensive coordinato­r under Don Shula for the Miami Dolphins’ undefeated Super Bowl champions in 1972.

Figure skating: Nathan Chen became the first American since Scott Hamilton to win a third consecutiv­e World Figure Skating Championsh­ips men’s title, outskating twotime Olympic champion Yuzuru Hanyu of Japan in Stockholm.
