If he’s not careful, Eddie Smith might start thinking that this head coaching thing is easy.

His James LoganUnion City football team sure made it look that way with its 467 dismantling of Moreau Catholic on Friday night.

Smith, the team’s defensive coordinator before being named interim coach in midFebruary after Ricky Rodriguez took a job in Tennessee, moved to 30 with the victory over the Mariners. His Colts have outscored opponents 11121 in those wins.

“We have a great family atmosphere,” Smith said after the win. “I look at them and I know they have my back. This is the first time head coaching for me, and I couldn’t have asked for a better group of young men and a better group of coaches. Coach Rodriguez set the foundation, and it’s been very easy to step in and continue his legacy.”

On Friday, that easiness was a byproduct of a defense that allowed just 128 yards of total offense, and a junior quarterback who was lights out. Marcus Sanders completed nine passes for 241 yards and four TDs.

“He’s good,” senior wideout DJ Johnson said of Sanders. “People have been sleeping on him and he’s been putting in the work.”

Johnson caught three passes for 119 yards and two TDs against Moreau Catholic.

Moreau Catholic (02) didn’t get on the scoreboard until late in the third quarter, when DeanTaylor Chapman returned a kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown.

The Mariners were playing without a pair of Pac12 commits. The Calbound Kaleb ElarmsOrr suffered an injury in the team’s opener on March 26, and Coloradobound receiver and defensive back Nikko Reed chose to sit out the remainder of the season to protect himself from a similar fate. Devin Arnold rushed 16 times for 106 yards for Moreau Catholic.

Other games: Nico Torrez rushed for three touchdowns and Dorian Hale added two TD runs as No. 1 De La SalleConcord (40) extended its unbeaten streak over Northern California opponents to 314 games (31202) with a 427 home win over JesuitCarmichael. … Wide receiver Matt Quesada connected with Quatama Massaquoi on a 67yard trickplay touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and thirdranked Pittsburg (30) was off to a 557 home win over No. 18 LibertyBrentwood (21). Pittsburg led 490 at halftime and the second half was played with a running clock. Quesada added a 40yard TD catch from Jaden Rashada and Daytuawn Pearson contributed a 72yard TD run. … Adam Garwood rushed 11 times for 176 yards and three touchdowns and No. 3 Los Gatos (30) took a 420 lead early in the second quarter while rolling over visiting Mountain View 5623.
