On Wednesday, September 24, 2021, Fred N. Dawson, loving husband to SalLee Dawson, passed away peacefully at the age of 78. Fred is survived by four children: Shelley Dawson, Brad Virga (wife, Sandy), Mike Virga and Dawn Simpson (husband, Dave); preceded in death by his youngest daughter, Laura Dawson; five grandchildren: Brittny, Cody, Mackenzie, Brett and Reagan; and three greatgrandchildren (Maverick, Bryce and Ashton).

Fred was born on July 12, 1942 in the District of Columbia. He grew up in Clovis, CA and attended Clovis High School where he was a star football player breaking several school records. After receiving a BA from UC Santa Barbara, Fred went on to complete law school at UCLA.

After working at the District Attorney’s office, Fred moved from Los Angeles to Sacramento and worked for the Public Defender’s office. Following, he specialized in criminal defense in private practice for over 40 years. Many who worked alongside or against Fred will remember his incredible orations during closing arguments or occasional disagreements with a judge. Fred had a passion for fishing, taking care of his roses and garden, visiting Hawaii, his San Francisco Giants and most of all, spending time with his family. He especially enjoyed teaching his great grandboys about the proper care and feeding of tomatoes. Fred was known for his quick wit, his enjoyment of good food/ drink (next time you have a martini – think of Fred), and the immense love he had for his wife.

As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to a charity Fred supported, Loaves & Fishes in Sacramento.
