Jean Marie McCarter Leonard

June 2, 1936-March 29, 2021

-

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Jean Leonard after a series of health challenges that she faced with grace, dignity, and courage. Jean was born in Norphlet, AR in 1936 and moved with her family to Berkeley, CA in 1942. It was in Berkeley that she met the love of her life, Fred Leonard. She graduated from Stanford University in 1957, and she was one of the first Black women in her class. Her Stanford connections were among the most important of her life, and she continued to participate as an active member of the Stanford community for the rest of her life.

She and Fred were married in 1957 and eventually settled in San Mateo, CA where they raised their two sons, Russell and Gary. Jean was active in the Highlands community where she played tennis, volunteered at the school where she served as PTA President, and was part of events such as the 4th of July parade. For many years, she had season tickets to the San Francisco Ballet. She was always the life of the party, impeccably dressed, with a glass of white wine in her hand.

When her sons were older, she worked for the Stanford Alumni Association, leading many travelstudy groups to destinations such as Italy, China, and South America. She was most proud of her work as a trustee for National University, and she was awarded an honorary doctorate in 1994.

Jean is survived by Fred, her husband of 64 years, her sons Russell (Carolyn) and Gary (Irina), and her three grandchildren, Zachary, Alyssa and Sarah.

Donations in Jean’s memory can be made to Peninsula Family Service or to the charity of your choice. A celebration of life will take place once the pandemic restrictions subside.
