On Sunday, March 7, 2021 our beloved, Joe Medina, age 58, passed away with grace and dignity at his home with his devoted husband, Duane, by his side. Joe fought a gallant, graceful battle with Glioblastoma for the past fifteen months and was a true example of courage to all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Joe was born in Weisbaden, Germany in 1962. He spent much of his life between Germany and the United States, graduated from San Jose State and received his B.S in Graphic Design from California College of the Arts. Joe was employed as a successful graphic designer for many years, owning and operating his own business. On Sunday June 28, 2008 Joe met the love of his life, Duane Vogel, while celebrating Gay Pride Weekend in San Francisco. He decided to call San Francisco his home and together he and Duane began building their lives together. On January 17, 2017 Joe and Duane became engaged in Koko Head, Hawaii and exactly one year later they sealed their love in marriage at San Francisco City Hall. Joe found beauty while exploring far away places, walking through a museum, in a fine bakery, and in the few steps just outside his door.

Joe was the proud uncle to Cole Sisneros, whom he loved like a son. Cole was the apple of his eye and he cherished every moment they spent together, whether it was playing basketball in the park or chilling at home playing board games. He loved being home and was a home body at heart. Joe’s talents were many. He cooked elaborate, beautiful meals, painted gorgeous works of art and realized his creativity in his many gardens. His true passion was baking, and he loved making Duane his favorite recipe, coconut cake. Joe was humbled by the respect and affection of everyone who knew him, and the world was a better place with him in it. His radiant smile would light up the room and when you were fortunate to be in his company you could feel his charm and kindness.

Joe is survived by his husband, travel companion, taste tester, best friend and care partner, Duane Vogel whom he loved deeply and Oknot, their fur baby, his brother Mario Medina, his sister Veronica Newman and his nephews Michael and Matthew Newman. Joe and Duane would like to thank all of his many friends and colleagues at Veritas Investments, for their unrelenting support, prepared meals and loving visits while he fought. Sincerest gratitude to the many who unselfishly donated to Joe’s, Go Fund Me page. Danke to all of Joe and Duane’s many friends, near and far who were always there to lend support any time of the day or night, we love you. Thank you also to the neuro oncology team at Kaiser here in the Bay Area for their care and guidance throughout Joe’s battle with Glioblastoma. A memorial celebration dedicated to Joe’s life will be held at a later date. Godspeed.
