Marlins rookies help beat deGrom, Mets

-

Jazz Chisholm Jr. watched Jacob deGrom’s first 100 mph fastball and wasn’t impressed.

“People were saying, ‘It’s an angry 100, it gets on you,’ ” the Marlins’ brazen, bluehaired Bahamian said. “It didn’t really get on me like I was expecting.”

“Some people’s 100 is a little lighter,” he added. “To me, it felt like he was on the lighter side.”

Miami’s youngsters don’t scare easily. Chisholm hit a homer off an otherwise dominant deGrom, Trevor Rogers beat the twotime Cy Young Award winner for the second time and the Marlins topped the New York Mets 30 Saturday at Citi Field. DeGrom (01) matched a career best with 14 strikeouts over eight innings, the 23yearold Rogers (11) fanned 10 in six and the teams combined for 28 overall.

Rogers mixed a fastball averaging 95 mph with a slider and changeup, inducing 19 swingandmisses in 82 pitches.

“This kid’s growing up right in front of our eyes,” Miami manager Don Mattingly said. Dodgers 9, Nationals 5: Chris Taylor hit a three-run homer in a five-run second inning as host Los Angeles defeated Washington.

Indians 11, Tigers 3: Aaron Civale allowed just three hits in 72⁄3 innings and was backed by five home runs, including Jordan Luplow’s three-run shot, for host Cleveland.

Pirates 8, Cubs 2: Mitch Keller pitched five efficient innings and host Pittsburgh used an early burst to chase Chicago’s Zach Davies.

Red Sox 6, Orioles 4: Rafael Devers homered and visiting Boston scored twice in the 10th inning to extend their win streak to five games. Baltimore’s Trey Mancini homered for the first time since his return from colon cancer.
