‘Weightless’ returns as streamed concert

Best bets from Datebook’s arts and entertainment critics and contributors

The stars in the theater galaxy seem to have aligned because three glorious, but heretofore separate, phenomena have joined forces for a new online production.

The first is the Kilbanes’ “Weightless,” a rock opera inspired by a myth about two sisters in Ovid’s “Metamorphoses” that combines gorgeous music, ferocious performances and a dazzlingly original structure.

The second is director Tamilla Woodard, who brought an impish touch to “Men on Boats” and a sure hand and incisive eye to “Top Girls,” both at American Conservatory Theater.

The third is the outdoor setting of the Bruns Amphitheater, the home base of California Shakespeare Theater, whose stage is like a giant, magical book plopped open amid the Orinda hills.

WP Theater, a 43yearold New York company, had originally planned to produce an inperson version of the show. Instead, it’s now a “theatrical concert film,” with many returning cast members, including creators Kate Kilbane and Dan Moses (who are also an Oakland couple), Lila Blue and Josh Pollock.

“Weightless”: On-demand streaming through May 30. Free. https:// wptheater.org
