Florence Higgins


Florence M. “Flo” Higgins, a long time Oakland resident, died Monday, April 5, 2021, after a long battle with cancer. Florence Mathilde Hansen was born September 7th 1930 in Medford, Oregon, to Rosa and Hannes Hansen. The family moved to Piedmont, California when Florence was a child. She graduated from Piedmont High School and attended the University of Oregon. After college, she worked for the U.S. Foreign Service in London, where she met and married Douglas Higgins, a naval attaché at the US embassy. They divorced in 1984.

Flo Higgins is remembered by family, friends and the colleagues she worked with as an elegant, gracious woman. She was a legal secretary and for many years an assistant to senior executives at Utah Internatio­nal, a San Franciscob­ased mining company. She retired in 1998. While Flo was a private person who rarely talked about herself, she was witty, perceptive and caring in her relationsh­ips with family, friends and colleagues.

Flo was an enthusiast­ic tennis player. In the early 90’s Flo was a member her company’s Women’s Whaleboat Rowing Team with weekly early morning practices in the Bay. For many years she enjoyed hiking in the East Bay hills with the “Wednesday Walkers.”

Flo is survived by her brother, Howard Hansen of Walnut Creek and nieces and nephews. Donations can be made to the Humane Society or the American Cancer Society.
