In a recent online game, the player with this hand bid 3C and went down 3. You’re outgunned on this one. Just bid 2C.

1NT here shows 18-19. You would have opened 1NT with 15-17 and you would pass now with less. Bid 1NT. Should you double, partner is sure to bid diamonds. Bid 3C. It is OK to have a little extra once in a while. A responsive double would be perfect, if you play that convention. If not, bid 2H.

Partner might only have three-card support. Bid 3S, which is a general invitation promising at least five spades. Three-card support is enough.
