One of the most sublime bites in the Outer Sunset is the pineapple bun ($1.95) with butter from Pineapple King Bakery. On the official pineapple bun family tree hanging in the 6yearold Cantonese bakery’s windows, which documents the different kinds of buns the bakery makes, this is the greatgrandmother — the ruling matriarch that started it all. The delicately sweet, spongy bun is cut in half and stuffed with a thick slice of salty, chilled Kerrygold Irish butter that softens slightly from the warmth of the fresh bun. If you feel like getting to know the rest of the family, get the deluxe box to try a range of buns with fillings like guava butter, ube cream, black sesame, BBQ pork and spam and egg. Or make this a dessert stop and order the pineapple bun with two scoops of Swensen’s vanilla or lychee ice cream. Afterward, make your way to the carfree Great Highway for a postbreakfast stroll or bike ride along the dunes. Cash only. Takeout only. 1915 Irving St. pineapplekingbakery.com

Once you’re hungry again, Palm City should be your next stop. Coowners Dennis Cantwell and Monica Wong, veterans of Nopa and Zuni Cafe, opened Palm City in April of last year. They never planned to be a takeout hoagie shop, but their pandemic pivot into Philly sandwiches became so popular the owners joke about the revolt that would ensue if they took them off the menu (don’t worry; the hoagies are here to stay). And while you might have enjoyed one of the enormous sandwiches stuffed with garlic roast pork and ‘nduja sauce togo during the pandemic, Palm City just reopened for inperson dining for the first time. Sit in the lightfilled dining room or grab one of the bright yellow bistro tables outside, order from the impressive selection of 200plus wines and enjoy a hoagie on an actual plate. Salads, housemade giardiniera, herbmarinated olives, anchovies and other snacks are also on the menu. Post lunch, unwind with a book and an espresso from Trouble Coffee at Black Bird Bookstore, which has a secret backyard primed for a peaceful afternoon read.

Takeout, limited indoor and outdoor dining. 4055 Irving St. palmcitysf.com/. 4033 Judah St., blackbirdbooksf.com/
