Isles tie it up with Lightning

Matt Martin capped New York’s threegoal second period, Ryan Pulock made a diving stop in front of an open goal in the closing seconds and the host Islanders held on to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning 32 to even their Stanley Cup semifinal series at two games apiece.

Josh Bailey and Mathew Barzal also scored, and Cal Clutterbuc­k and Adam Pelech each had two assists. Semyon Varlamov finished with 28 saves.

Brayden Point had a goal for the seventh straight game, and Tyler Johnson also scored for the defending champion Lightning. Carolina defenseman Jaccob Slavin won the NHL’s Lady Byng Memorial trophy for sportsmans­hip and gentlemanl­y conduct. The 27yearold from Denver got 73 of 100 firstplace votes from hockey writers. Minnesota defenseman Jared Spurgeon was second, Toronto forward Auston Matthews third.

Baseball: At the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., Jayson Gonzalez grounded a basesloade­d single through a drawnin infield with one out as Vanderbilt defeated Arizona 76 in 12 innings. It was the first extrainnin­g game at the event since 2014.

On Monday, Arizona will face Stanford in an eliminatio­n game at 11 a.m. Vanderbilt plays North Carolina State at 4 p.m. Pitcher Sang Ho Baek, who just finished his freshman season at George Mason, died from complicati­ons after Tommy John surgery in Salisbury, Md., on June 12.

Tennis: Ons Jabeur and Daria Kasatkina pulled double duty to reach the final at the Viking Classic, each winning twice Saturday.

Jabeur, from Tunisia, eliminated Heather Watson, who had become the first British woman since 1992 to reach the semifinals on the Birmingham, England, grass. Jabeur beat Watson 63, 63 a few hours after dispatchin­g Anastasia Potapova of Russia 64, 60.

In the final, secondseed­ed Jabeur will face fourthseed­ed Daria Kasatkina of Russia. Kasatkina overcame Czech qualifier Thereza Martincova in a threeset quarterfin­al and then defeated American CoCo Vandeweghe 62, 64 in the semifinals. Belinda Bencic seeks to win her first title since 2019 when she takes on firsttime finalist Liudmila Samsonova at the Berlin Open. Bencic defeated Alize Cornet 75, 64. Samsonova upset twotime Australian Open winner Victoria Azarenka 64, 62. Andrey Rublev reached his first grasscourt final at the Halle Open and will face Ugo Humbert. Rublev won 61, 36, 63 over Nikoloz Basilashvi­li. Humbert beat Felix AugerAlias­sime 64, 36, 76 (5). Topseeded Matteo Berrettini will face yet another Briton in the Queen’s Club final in London. Berrettini defeated 22ndranked Alex de Minaur of Australia 64, 64, and Cameron Norrie beat secondseed­ed Denis Shapovalov of Canada 75, 63.

WNBA: Courtney Vandersloo­t had 18 points and 11 assists and the host Chicago Sky defeated the Connecticu­t Sun 9181 for their fifth straight win . ... Tina Charles had 30 points as the host Washington Mystics beat the Indiana Fever 8277 . ... Marina Mabrey scored 28 points off the bench as the host Dallas Wings routed the Minnesota Lynx 9577.

Auto racing: Kyle Busch raced to his 100th career Xfinity Series victory at Nashville Superspeed­way in Lebanon, Tenn. Busch led seven times for 123 laps and beat Justin Allgaier in overtime for his third victory in three Xfinity races this season. Josef Newgarden earned the pole for the IndyCar race at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis., as he tries to help Team Penske earn its first win of the season. Formula One championsh­ip leader Max Verstappen won his second pole of the season and put his Red Bull car in front of Mercedes rival Lewis Hamilton to start the French Grand Prix in Le Castellet.
