Astros’ 11game run is halted by Tigers

-

Zack Short’s first home run in the majors broke a fifthinning tie and helped the host Detroit Tigers snap the Houston Astros’ 11game winning streak with a 31 victory in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader.

Yordan Alvarez and Carlos Correa hit backtoback homers in the sixth inning to help the Astros win the second game 32.

In the opener, Casey Mize (54) improved to 20 in his past four starts, giving up one run on six hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out five to beat the Astros for the second time this season.

Jose Cisnero pitched the seventh for his third save of the season.

Short, called up as Detroit’s 27th man for the doubleheader, had his first career extrabase hit on a thirdinning double, then homered against Framber Valdez in the fifth.

“I knew I hit it pretty well, but I saw (right fielder Kyle) Tucker getting ready to jump,” Short said. “When he didn’t get it, I definitely blacked out. That’s an incredible feeling.”

The Tigers then took a 20 lead into the sixth of the seveninning nightcap.

That’s when Jose Altuve got the Astros going, hitting a double against reliever Michael Fulmer. With two outs, Alvarez hit a tying drive into the Houston bullpen. Two pitches later, Correa hit a ball over the Tigers bullpen for the lead.

Mets 4, Phillies 3: New York starter Jacob deGrom gave up two runs for the first time this season but the host Mets beat

Philadelphia when Michael Conforto’s sacrifice fly scored Billy McKinney in the ninth inning. DeGrom, who pitched six innings, saw his ERA rise from 0.50 to 0.69 — still the lowest for a pitcher through 13 starts since earned runs became a statistic in 1913.

Cardinals 3, Pirates 1: Adam Wainwright pitched into the seventh inning and Paul Goldschmidt and Paul DeJong hit solo home runs as host St. Louis ended a five-game losing streak.

Blue Jays 12, Orioles 4: In Buffalo, N.Y., Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his 26th home run and Teoscar Hernandez and Randal Grichuk also connected for host Toronto.

Rangers 8, Royals 0: Kyle Gibson had a season-high 10 strikeouts over seven innings in his 16th consecutive start without a loss and Joey Gallo hit two homers for host Texas.

Reds 4, Braves 1: Luis Castillo pitched seven scoreless innings and Jesse Winker homered before departing with a hip injury for host Cincinnati.

Brewers 10, Rockies 4: Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer during a six-run rally in the eighth inning for host Milwaukee.

Rays 13, Angels 3: Manuel Margot and Mike Zunino homered and Ji-Man Choi had four hits as host Tampa Bay won its fourth in a row to improve to 6-0 against Los Angeles this season.

Marlins 3, Nationals 2: Rookie Zach Thompson struck out 11 in six innings and Jon Berti hit a tie-breaking homer in the fifth for host Miami.

Dodgers 3, Cubs 2: Cody Bellinger homered with two outs in the ninth inning as host Los Angeles beat Chicago for the second night in a row.

Red Sox 4, Yankees 2: Nathan Eovaldi limited visiting New York to one run in 72⁄3 innings and Xander Bogaerts and Hunter Renfroe had three hits apiece in Boston’s victory.

Mariners-White Sox, susp.: The game in Chicago was suspended in the third inning because of rain and will be resumed Sunday. The suspended game will be a nineinning affair, with the originally scheduled one now set for seven innings.

Indians-Twins, ppd.: The game in Minneapolis was postponed because of rain and rescheduled as part of a split doubleheader on Sept. 14.
