Quakes lose Clasico 31 before 18,000 in San Jose

The Earthquake­s and their seasonbest 18,000 fans were no match for Chicharito on Saturday night.

Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, the Mexican national team star who at $6 million a year has the secondhigh­est contract in MLS, scored twice and the LA Galaxy beat San Jose 31 at PayPal Park.

It was the first game this season in which the Quakes were allowed a fullcapaci­ty crowd, and the California Clasico rivalry drew a sellout. It was the most to see a sporting event in Santa Clara County since the start of the pandemic.

Hernandez opened the scoring in the 11th minute with a charging run through the center of the area and a closerange volley to finish Samuel Grandsir’s wellplaced cross.

Chicharito gave the Galaxy (730) a 20 lead in the 50th minute, tapping in Kevin Cabral’s cross for his MLSleading 10th goal of the season.
