San Francisco Chronicle - (Sunday)
Robert “Bob” Randig
Bob passed peacefully at home on June 13th surrounded by his family. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Erna, three children, their spouses, and four grandchildren.
Bob was born in 1935 and raised in San Francisco, earning a degree in engineering from UC Berkeley in 1958; upon graduation he joined the Marine Corps. During his service, he renewed a friendship with Erna, and they wed in 1960. Together, they discovered the joy of hiking and became lifetime members of the California Alpine Club. Bob and Erna relocated to Marin in 1964 and settled in Greenbrae to raise their family. They were active members in Marin Lutheran Church, and both sang in the church choir. There, Bob found a joy in singing that launched a lifelong passion for vocal music; he sang in chorale groups for 5 decades, touring with Winifred Baker Chorale in the 80’s and 90’s highlighted by visits to Europe and twice performing in Carnegie Hall.
For 30 years as a general contractor, Bob specialized in fast food restaurant and gas station construction. Upon retirement in his early 60’s, Bob turned to other pastimes – enjoying time with his grandchildren, raising his prized cymbidium orchids, fishing in the Eastern Sierras, and growing and sharing the bounty of his garden with family and neighbors.
There have been lovely lighthearted moments interspersed with sadness these last few days. We were awed by Bob’s bravery and courage to fight on, despite the lack of improvement hoped for from the treatment he underwent – we wish he could have won. We are grateful Bob is at peace; he benefited from compassionate and amazing care from doctors, therapists and caregivers in his final months – we cherish the time we had. Our lives continue, but will be a little less fulfilled, without his guiding presence in our lives.
A celebration of life will be scheduled at a later date; please contact the family for information.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Bob’s name be made to the National Brain Tumor Society (braintumor.org) or The Marin Symphony (marinsymphony.org). “The song has ended, but the melody lingers on.” Irving Berlin
