Gail Scannell, 72, passed away at her home on January 14, 2021 in Tucson, Ariz., after a long illness. Born and raised in San Francisco, Gail was a proud graduate of Saint Paul’s High School, in 1966. She was a long-time employee of Pacific Bell and also spent much of her early adult years helping to take care of her younger siblings and her father after the sudden passing of her mother.

Gail devoted her life to helping others, providing a warm and loving home and taking care of her husband and three children. She regularly volunteered her time at St. Mary’s of the Angels School in Ukiah, Calif., where her children attended school from Kindergarten through eighth grade. In her free time, she was an avid reader of books.

Shortly after her family relocated to Durango, Colo., in July 2000, Gail suffered a heart block and required a pacemaker to be implanted. Despite this serious health setback, she never let it prevent her from living her life as she continued to take care of her husband and children, while at the same time continuing to brighten people’s days with smiles and laughter.

After all of her children had graduated high school, she furthered her love of books and reading by taking a job at a Walden Books store in Durango, where she worked for over three years, enjoying many laughs and smiles with fellow employees and customers.

In June 2008, Gail and her husband relocated to Tucson, Ariz., to be closer to some of their children. She was an avid fan of the University of Arizona men’s basketball team and had season tickets for many years becoming a regular in the crowd at the McKale Center.

She is survived by Michael, her husband of 43 years; daughter, Shannon; and sons, Brian (Luciana), and Kevin; brothers, William (Kacy) Pyne, Tommy (Robin) Pyne; and sister, Sandy (Eddie) Diaz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Irene Pyne; and her sister, Carol Vick.

A memorial Mass in honor of Gail’s life, officiated by Father Mario Farana, will be held at Saint Paul’s Catholic Church, 221 Valley Street on July 16, 2021 at 10:00 am.
