Zhang adds junior title to women’s amateur crown

-

Rose Zhang won the U.S. Girls’ Junior on Saturday at Columbia Country Club in Chevy Chase, Md., beating Bailey Davis 6 and 4 in the 36hole final to become the eighth player to win both the junior and U.S. Women’s Amateur.

Zhang, 18, won the amateur last year at Woodmont Country Club in Rockville, Md.

A rising Stanford freshman from Irvine, Zhang finished off Davis with a birdie win on the par4 32nd.

“To be able to win in such a grueling week, it’s truly amazing,” said Zhang, the topranked amateur in the world. “In USGA events, you really need your ‘A’ game in terms of your patience, your grit and your golf game.”

The 18yearold Davis, from White Plains, Md., was trying to become the first African American player to win a women’s USGA title. An incoming freshman at Tennessee, she’s a threetime Maryland high school state champ. Ariya and Moriya Jutanugarn won the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational, shooting their second 11under 59 in bestball to beat defending champions Cydney Clanton and Jasmine Suwannapura by three shots.

Ariya, 25, won for the 12th time on the LPGA Tour and second this season, and Moriya, 26, took her second title.

The Jutanugarns finished at 24under 256 at Midland (Mich.) Country Club. Cal alum James Hahn missed a chance to shoot the 13th sub60 round in PGA Tour history. He settled for a 12under 60 and a chance to win Barbasol Championship in Nicholasville, Ky.

Eight strokes back entering the day, Hahn had two eagles to move within two strokes of leader J.T. Poston.

Joseph Bramlett (Stanford) had a 67 to join Hahn at 17under.

Tampa’s Goodrow traded to Rangers

The Lightning are starting to see the reality of being a championship team with salary cap issues, trading former Sharks forward Barclay Goodrow to the New York Rangers for a 2021 seventhround pick.

A key piece of the Lightning’s backtoback champs, Goodrow played on the “gritty” line with center Yanni Gourde and Blake Coleman.

Last week, Lightning general manager Julien BriseBois said Goodrow was one of the players on the team who deserved a raise, but he wasn’t sure he could give it to him.

Goodrow is an unrestricted free agent, so he won’t be exposed in the expansion draft. The Flyers got defenseman Ryan Ellis from Nashville for defenseman Philippe Myers and forward Nolan Patrick. The Maple Leafs acquired forward Jared McCann from the Penguins for prospect Filip Hallander and a seventhround pick in 2023. Defenseman Miro Heiskanen signed a $67.6 million, eightyear deal with the Stars.

Christopher Bell turned a spot start in the Xfinity Series into a trip to victory lane, winning in a romp at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. Bell won every stage in the No. 54 Toyota and captured his 17th career Xfinity race. He won seven races in 2018, nine in 2019 and was promoted to the Cup series last season. Justin Allgaier was second, then Daniel Hemric. Max Verstappen outran Lewis Hamilton at the start of Formula One’s first sprint qualifying race to take the pole for the British Grand Prix in Silverstone and spoil the seventime champ’s homecoming.
