Evan Longoria is the Giants’ best defensive option at third base, with Kris Bryant a close second, but with Bryant mostly in the outfield and Longoria dealing with discomfort after taking a pitch off a finger on his right hand during a swing Wednesday, Wilmer Flores is handling most of the duties there.

Saturday, he made his fifth error of the season there in 100 chances, throwing wildly past first to put Mark Canha at third base for Oakland to start the bottom of the first. Canha scored on Starling Marte’s double. Manager Gabe Kapler said he wasn’t sure if first baseman Brandon Belt had a chance to come off the bag to make a play on the throw or not, but added, “I don’t think we’ve been playing our best defense . ... We have to continue to tune up our D. We work really hard at it, but we can be better. And I think all of our players feel the same.”

It’s unclear when Longoria will be back, but he’s not on the injured list and Kapler said an MRI showed no fracture of the finger. The hope had been that he’d be available off the bench Saturday but Kapler said after the game that Longoria only would have been used in an emergency role on defense only. He will not be in the lineup Sunday,

making it unlikely Longoria will play before Tuesday at New York.

Pitching questions: Righthander Anthony DeSclafani played catch before Saturday’s game and, Kapler said, the session didn’t go particularly well, with DeSclafani having difficulty pushing off to throw. DeSclafani is lined up to start Tuesday against the Mets in New York, but is being monitored as he comes back from ankle inflammation that required a cortisone shot.

Kapler said the team remained hopeful that DeSclafani can throw a bullpen session Sunday. If DeSclafani can’t go Tuesday, Sammy Long is on turn to start for Triple-A Sacramento. Johnny Cueto, who is on the injured list with a right flexor tendon strain, appears to be the most likely option to start Wednesday’s game at New York. He’s in the Dominican Republic following the death of his mother-in-law, but is expected to rejoin the team for the Mets series.
