Treva Jo Marcus

-

Treva Jo (Hatchett) Marcus passed away peacefully on August 15, 2021. Treva was born on July 9, 1926 in Foss, Oklahoma to Harold James “Sandy” Hatchett and Opal (Gunter) Hatchett. A child of the depression, Treva moved further west with her mother and infant brother Harold Gene after the death of her father in the early 1930’s. They moved first to Southern Oregon where her beloved mother worked in her aunt and uncle’s lumber camp and later moved to Siskiyou County, California. At a young age Treva and her brother made their home in Dunsmuir, CA when their mother Opal met and married Hebert Morgan. A loving stepfather, Herbert worked many diverse jobs during the height of the depression before becoming a respected locomotive engineer on the Southern Pacific Railroad, where he was employed for many years.

In Dunsmuir, Treva grew up in a warm and loving community that forever remained close to her heart. Throughout her life she remained active and engaged with her many friends from her youthful days in Dunsmuir. Treva enrolled in U.C. Berkeley and then the Army Cadet Nurse Corps at St. Luke’s Hospital in San Francisco during WWII. Completing her studies at U.C Berkeley and St. Luke’s after the war ended, Treva worked as an RN during which time at Berkeley she met the love of her life Donald C. Marcus. Happily married for 55 years until his death in 2003, Treva Jo and Don had two children Gerrie and Donald J.

Switching careers after the birth of her children, Treva went back to college at San Francisco State and became a schoolteacher in the SF Unified School District. She worked for many years as a fifthgrade teacher at Grant and Marshall Elementary schools. A beautiful and vibrant woman, Treva loved her family and friends, her home in San Francisco and her career as a teacher. She took great pleasure in a wide range of social activities and in travelling with her husband and daughter. She held various offices including president of local and regional chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Colonial Dames. She had a great passion for genealogy, visiting her relations in Oklahoma and Texas and tracking her ancestors throughout the upper South.

After the loss of her husband, she moved to San Francisco Towers where she enjoyed many happy years. Always appreciative of the kind and gracious staff at her residence, she developed many enduring friendships among the residents and caregivers at the Towers. A woman from a bygone era, Treva clung to life as she lived it: with grit, determination, a ready smile, and precious few complaints. Treva had many blessings and a full, wonderful life. She will be missed by many and not forgotten. In addition to her husband Donald, Treva is predeceased by her brother Harold Gene and her dear friend Walter Baglein. She is survived by her daughter Gerrie Marcus, son Donald J. Marcus (Gwen), three grandchildren, Daniel (Rebecca), Claire and Nora Marcus and numerous nieces and nephews. Because of COVID there is no in person gathering planned at this time.
