Another chance to catch incisive play ‘Cry It Out’
Motherhood, in “Cry It Out,” is the length of a baby monitor’s signal. It’s loneliness and isolation, as well as the small, unlikely rituals and friendships new moms make to stave off the abyss.
When Molly Smith Metzler’s play got its Bay Area premiere via Just Theater in 2019, I felt bad for everyone who didn’t get a chance to see it. Now you have another chance. The show follows three new moms from different walks of life, each of whom must make an incredibly difficult decision that society will punish her for, no matter what she chooses. But Smith Metzler never pontificates, and she leavens characters’ grim realities with profound compassion, cathartic humor and an uncanny ear for dialogue.
