Quakes hang on to beat Real Salt Lake

Cade Cowell and Carlos Fierro each had a goal and an assist as the Earthquake­s beat Real Salt Lake 4-3 on Saturday in Sandy, Utah.

San Jose (10-13-10), which was already eliminated from playoff contention, has won back-to-back matches at RSL for the first time after winning on May 7 at Rio Tinto Stadium. Salt Lake (13-13-6) saw its club record seven-game home win streak end.

Real Salt Lake could have clinched a postseason berth with a victory plus help from Week 34 Western Conference results, but it is in danger of slipping out of the playoffs.

Chris Wondolowsk­i scored in first-half stoppage time for his 170th career goal, extending his record, to give San Jose a 2-1 lead. Wondolowsk­i has 13 goals against Real Salt Lake, joining Landon Donovan as the top scorers against RSL since it joined MLS in 2005.

Cowell made it 3-1 in the 69th, his first since July 3, and Jackson Yueill gave San Jose a three-goal lead in the 79th.

Albert Rusnak had a goal in each half for RSL. Maikel Chang scored in the 85th.

Valentin Castellano­s scored two goals to stay in the mix for the Golden Boot award and New York City FC (14-11-8) won 3-1 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to eliminiate Inter Miami (11-17-5) from playoff contention . ... Fabio scored a gamewinnin­g goal in second-half stoppage time as the host New York Red Bulls beat Montreal 1-0. New York (13-12-7) has not scored or conceded more than one goal in its past nine home matches. Montreal (11-11-10) had drawn its last three matches with two of those featuring 95th-minute equalizers . ... Luiz Araujo scored for the second straight game and host Atlanta United and Toronto FC tied 1-1. Atlanta (12-9-11) remained in fourth place in the East, while Toronto fell to 6-17-10 . ... Lucas Zelarayan scored twice, Pedro Santos added a goal and the Columbus Crew beat host D.C. United 3-1 to keep their playoff hopes alive. Columbus (1213-8) and D.C. United (13-15-5) are tied with 44 points, two back of the New York Red Bulls for the seventh and final East playoff spot . ... In the 80th minute, Franco Jara scored his third goal in four games as host FC Dallas (7-15-11) won 2-1 over 10-man Austin FC (8-20-4).

In the Premier League, Reece James scored a second-half double to lead Chelsea to a 3-0 victory at Newcastle, extending the London club’s lead at the top of the Premier League to three points . ... Manchester City slumped to a second loss in its Premier League title defense as goals by Wilfried Zaha and Conor Gallagher earned Crystal Palace a 2-0 win at Etihad Stadium. ... Cristiano Ronaldo and Edinson Cavani — with a combined age of 70 — scored before Marcus Rashford netted as Manchester United won 3-0 at Tottenham . ... Visiting Brighton came the closest of any opponent in six months to ending Liverpool’s 24-match unbeaten run by recovering from two goals down to draw 2-2.
