Quakes hang on to beat Real Salt Lake
Cade Cowell and Carlos Fierro each had a goal and an assist as the Earthquakes beat Real Salt Lake 4-3 on Saturday in Sandy, Utah.
San Jose (10-13-10), which was already eliminated from playoff contention, has won back-to-back matches at RSL for the first time after winning on May 7 at Rio Tinto Stadium. Salt Lake (13-13-6) saw its club record seven-game home win streak end.
Real Salt Lake could have clinched a postseason berth with a victory plus help from Week 34 Western Conference results, but it is in danger of slipping out of the playoffs.
Chris Wondolowski scored in first-half stoppage time for his 170th career goal, extending his record, to give San Jose a 2-1 lead. Wondolowski has 13 goals against Real Salt Lake, joining Landon Donovan as the top scorers against RSL since it joined MLS in 2005.
Cowell made it 3-1 in the 69th, his first since July 3, and Jackson Yueill gave San Jose a three-goal lead in the 79th.
Albert Rusnak had a goal in each half for RSL. Maikel Chang scored in the 85th.
Valentin Castellanos scored two goals to stay in the mix for the Golden Boot award and New York City FC (14-11-8) won 3-1 in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to eliminiate Inter Miami (11-17-5) from playoff contention . ...
