Robert James Roomian

-

Native San Franciscan, Robert James Roomian, our “Poppi,” peacefully passed away on 10/22/2021. Born to the late George Artem Roomian and Helen Tremmel Roomian, he was raised on Chenery Street where his father ran the Fairmont Grocery. He attended Fairmont Grammar School, Poly High School (his senior superlative was “best hair”) and City College of San Francisco. He also played violin in the San Francisco Youth Orchestra. After serving in the U.S. Army, Bob attended court reporting school and eventually founded Gary & Roomian Court Reporters. Gary & Roomian served the legal community in San Francisco from its office on Sutter Street for almost 30 years. Typically, he walked to his depositions through the City he loved so much.

Bob loved reminiscing with friends and family about his wonderful childhood in San Francisco; riding his bike to Fleishhacker Pool, celebrating

New Year’s Eve at dancing clubs in the Mission, and basketball with friends on Friday nights in Glen Park. He grew up spending summer weekends with his family up the Russian River. In 1959, Bob married Juanita Hyder and settled in the Excelsior district following the births of their sons Mark and Christopher. Later they purchased a home in Southern Hills, Daly City. In 1970, the family moved to San Rafael and Bob was active in his sons’ sporting activities and enjoyed tennis. Generous to a fault, Bob treated his family to vacations in Carnelian Woods, Lake Tahoe as well as Asia and month-long vacations in Europe where he visited Basel, Switzerland and met his mother’s family, the Saners. Upon retirement, he and Juanita relocated to St. Helena. Juanita passed away in 2014 and since then, Poppi has remained in his own home cared for by his son Mark and daughter-inlaw Suzanne. Bob enjoyed bocce, was an avid SF Giants/49ers/Warriors fan, taking care of his yard and pool and attending mass at St. Helena Catholic Church. Bob leaves behind his sons Mark and Christopher, their wives Suzanne and Therese and granddaughters: Victoria, Bianca and Audrey. He will also be fondly remembered by the Young, Hyder and Abreu families. He leaves behind numerous friends in the San Francisco Bay Area and will be missed by the members of Bocce Architetti and his faithful K-9 companion,

Lucky! Bob is reunited now with his parents whom he spoke of so often and, of course, his wife of over 50 years, Juanita.

We will never forget you. A big thank you to the staff at St. Helena Hospital and Napa Post Acute as both provided stellar care and massive support during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Helena Volunteer Fire Department, St. Helena Hospital and the St. Helena Catholic Church.
