John Carrel Weaver, Jr.
Dr. John Carrel Weaver, Jr., father of John C. Weaver III and son of Violet Jurs Weaver and John Carrel Weaver, passed away at Highland Hospital, where he had once served his medical residency, at the age of 85. An Oakland native born on August 12, 1936, he lived in the Rockridge neighborhood until moving to Piedmont in 1942. In 1954 he graduated from Piedmont High School, went on to attend Stanford University (class of 1958), followed by medical school at Northwestern University.
He served his internship at Highland Hospital from 1962 to 1963. Following that he served active duty as a US Navy doctor based with the Marine Corps in Okinawa and Japan.
He returned to serve his medical residency at Highland Hospital, followed by a fellowship in Nephrology at San Francisco General Hospital (UCSF) from 1968 to 1969.
He joined what became the Oakland Medical Group in 1969, and in 1970 started the Chronic Hemodialysis Program at Providence Hospital in Oakland making him the first physician to provide dialysis services in the East Bay.
He later worked with East Bay Nephrology Group and Santa Rosa Medical Clinic in Coachella, CA.
A generous volunteer, he traveled extensively to bring his medical skills to underserved areas around the world and in his home state. His work took him to Thailand, American Samoa, Cambodia, Malawi and Peru. Closer to home, he worked at Clinica de la Raza in Oakland, the West Oakland Community Health Center and rural clinics in Tuolumne, Copperopolis and Garberville. A lifelong learner, he studied Spanish to better serve his patients. He enjoyed exploring the world. His travels took him to six of the seven continents and were highlighted by his time in Japan. During his deployment as a US Marine in Okinawa, he toured the country extensively, traveling by train, visiting Hiroshima and Nagasaki and climbing Mount Fujiyama. He also visited Hong Kong, Thailand and the Philippines.
His community involvements and club memberships included the Piedmont Community Church, Alameda-Contra Costa Medical Association, the Claremont Country Club and fifty years serving with the Oakland Rotary Club, visiting all the Central American countries for international projects with the World Community Service Committee.
In addition to travel, John enjoyed fishing, duck hunting and golf. A lifelong embracer of conservative ideals, he proudly flew the American flag from his porch railing above the Oakland estuary.
John was preceded in death by his parents and by his former wife, Brenda Best Weaver. He is survived by his son, John C. Weaver III, of San Francisco, sisters Stephanie Mooers of Piedmont and Julie Weaver or Portland, Oregon. He also leaves behind nieces and nephews Michael Mooers of Grass Valley, California, Jeff Mooers of Lafayette, California, Tom Mooers of Sierra City, California and Justin Anderson, Mary Kate Horwood, Emily Anderson Johnson and Jennifer Garcia Navarro, all of the Seattle, Washington area.
