Dr. Amal Lina Khoury passed away at the age of 40 on Tuesday, November 16, 2021. She was surrounded by her family and slipped away peacefully at UCSF Medical Center after a long fight with cancer. She was born in the same place on November 11, 1981, and was the first born child of Khalil and Abeer Khoury. She is the eldest sister of Dalia, Lana, Tamara, and Matthew Khoury. Amal grew up in the Bay Area with all of her siblings and cousins. She attended St. Catherine of Siena elementary school, Notre Dame Belmont High School, then graduated from University of California, Riverside with a B.S. in Molecular, Cell and Development Biology. She moved to Washington D.C. and graduated from Howard University with her M.D. She completed her surgery residency at her alma mater, and during that time earned her Masters in Public Health from University of North Carolina. She eventually moved back to the Bay Area for her fellowship in Oncological Breast Surgery at UCSF. She worked as an attending surgeon at Highland Hospital for the last three years. Among her many achievements,

Amal conducted health disparities research with a focus on breast cancer outcomes among African American women living in the Washington, D.C. area. She was an avid reader, loved working on projects around the house, and got really into caring for her garden and house plants. Amal was always the life of the party, and our family’s dancing queen. She was so in touch with her Palestinian roots that she spent several years of her life on various Palestinian Debka troupes. Amal is survived by her parents, siblings, and her dog Ghost. She lifted all of our heads with pride, and is so sorely missed already.
