Mississipp­i deals Cal women first defeat of season

Shakira Austin scored 14 points to lead three Mississipp­i players in double figures and the Rebels ended Cal’s fivegame, season-opening winning streak with a 64-45 victory at Haas Pavilion on Saturday in the championsh­ip game of the Raising the B.A.R. Invitation­al.

The Bears, who shot 49% in their tournament-opening win over Furman on Friday, were held to 23% shooting by Mississipp­i.

“We struggled to make shots, and I wish we could have been better,” Cal head coach Charmin Smith said. “But a lot of things to learn from here as we move on and get ready for Fresno State on Thursday.”

Austin scored the first four points of the game as Mississipp­i took a lead it would not relinquish. The Rebels (6-1) led 12-9 after the first period, took their first double-digit lead on a 3-pointer by Snudda Collins with 21 seconds left in the first half and led by at least nine points the rest of the way.

Cal (5-1) got 12 points from Jayda Curry and 10 from Cailyn Crocker, but the players were a combined 5-for-28 from the field, including 1-for-13 from 3-point range.

45: Taycee Wedin had 22 points and the host Gaels (3-3) jumped to an 18-4 first-quarter lead as they defeated the Gauchos (2-3).

#4 Indiana 53, Miami 51: Mackenzie Holmes had 14 points and 11 rebounds as the Hoosiers (5-1) beat the Hurricanes (4-2) in Nassau, Bahamas. #5 North Carolina State 62, Washington State 34: Diamond Johnson scored 24 points and the Wolfpack (6-1) beat the Cougars (4-1) in St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands.

#6 Baylor 74, Houston 58: NaLyssa Smith had 21 points and 19 rebounds as the Bears (6-1) beat the Cougars (3-4) in the championsh­ip game in the Cancun Challenge.

#9 Arizona 80, Rutgers 44: Cate Reese scored 16 points as the Wildcats (6-0) beat the Scarlet Knights (4-4) in St. Thomas. Notre Dame 64, #16 Oregon State

62: Maya Dodson had 14 points and nine rebounds as the Fighting Irish (6-1) beat the Beavers (3-2) in Daytona Beach, Fla. Talia Von Oelhoffen scored 25 points for Oregon State.

Utah 73, Hawaii 57: Brynna Maxwell scored 23 points for the Utes (5-1) in the Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Honolulu. Hawaii (3-3) got 19 points from Daejah Phillips.

South Dakota State 76, #19 UCLA

66: Sacred Heart Cathedral alum IImar’i Thomas, a graduate transfer from Cincinnati, scored a game-high 18 points for the Bruins (3-2) in their loss to the Jackrabbit­s (3-4) in Estero, Fla.

Colorado 59, Louisiana Tech 58:

Peanut Tuitele scored 14 points to lead the host Buffaloes (6-0) past the Techsters (4-2).

Arizona State 58, Fordham 43:

Jaddan Simmons scored 16 points as the Sun Devils (3-4) topped the Rams (4-3) in Cancun.

North Carolina 58, Washington 37:

The Huskies (2-4) were held to 28% shooting in their loss to the Tar Heels (6-0) in Bimini, Bahamas.

Central Florida 56, USC 47: Alyson Miura scored 12 points for the Trojans (4-2) in their loss to the Knights (5-1) in Cancun.
