No. 1 Baylor tops Iowa St.
Salesian-Richmond alum James Akinjo scored 16 points, LJ Cryer had 10 of his 13 in the second half, and top-ranked Baylor beat No. 8 Iowa State 77-72 on Saturday in Ames, Iowa.
Baylor (13-0, 1-0 Big 12) never trailed in only the fourth Division I matchup of 12-0 teams in 40 years and the first game between top-10 teams at Hilton Coliseum since 2014.
Tristan Enaruna scored 23 points for the Cyclones (12-1, 0-1).

Jalen Coleman-Lands scored 20 points for the host Jayhawks (11-1) against the Patriots (7-6).

Justin Moore hit a go-ahead jumper with 1:36 to play and the visiting Wildcats (9-4, 2-1 Big East) topped the Pirates (9-3, 0-2) in Newark, N.J.
#17 Texas 74, West Virginia 59: Marcus Carr scored 20 points to help the host Longhorns (11-2) end the Mountaineers’ eight-game winning streak by winning the Big 12 opener for both teams. West Virginia (11-2) was without leading scorer Taz Sherman, who is in COVID-19 protocols.
#21 Providence 70, DePaul 53: Aljami Durham scored 17 points and the Friars (13-1, 3-0 Big East) beat the host Blue Demons (9-3, 0-2).
Among the games scrapped Saturday was the WCC opener between USF and St. Mary’s, which cited health and safety protocols in its program in the decision to postpone the game.
